Description

The RATS Tourniquet is the fastest and most affordable tourniquet on the market. Solid vulcanized rubber core with a nylon sheath, combined with a locking mechanism that creates high efficiency. Its versatility is unparalleled, working on all limb sizes, i.e. adults, dogs and children.

  • Made in the USA
  • Vulcanized Rubber Core
  • Controls bleeding
  • Fast and easy to use
  • Compact allowing you to store most anywhere
  • Simple design allows for one handed application
*At Rapid Medical, we understand that some will question the efficacy of the RATS tourniquet. It is a much different design than traditional windlass tourniquets, such as the CAT TQ. If you are skeptical, we encourage you to keep an open mind. Its rapid application, portability, compact design, and undeniable versatility make it a must-have. It truly is the most affordable and effective tourniquet on the market, but don’t just take our word for it.

A recent Cambridge Study, ‘The Efficacy of Novel Commercial Tourniquet Designs for Extremity Hemorrhage Control,’ determined that RATS and CAT success rates for distal arterial flow cessation were the same. Read the study in its entirety

A Good Concept, but with Poor Execution

Before I properly start, allow me to preface this, by no means am I against a tourniquet designed for the community, quite the contrary in fact. Additionally, I say this not as a person trying to complain, but as someone who wants to help it be more. Now then, with that said, yeah, this is basically just a slightly thicker elastic cord with a poor attempt at retention. Now then, ask yourself this, why do you think this tourniquet isn't recommended by the CoTCCC? I have various reasons why, and first of all, this isn't the tourniwuet you'd want to rely on, as it's incredibly thin, which makes it so that A; it's tougher to apply in a way that properly stops bleeding, and B; it is more likely to cause nerve damage compared to a more standard tourniquet. Additionally, it lacks a windlass, which is much more easy to operate when you'd be running mostly on adrenaline and trying to stop the bleeding, whereas with this you have to wrap it around multiple times, making sure you don't screw up the application of each wrap and if you mess that up, then it'll be ineffective at stopping the bleeding. As for the retention method, with the CAT and SOFT-T, they both have a clasp or buckle portion to effectively store the windlass without it coming loose, with it not requiring too much fine motor control, whereas with the RATS, you have to tie a knot in order to make it "really secure" and even then, it's still much easier to come undone and it's much more difficult to properly tie a knot while under severe adrenaline which weakens your fine motor control. There are various other options for this as well. If you want something similar to this but something much better, buy a Ratcheting Medical Tourniquet, or RMT for short. It's incredibly simple to apply, and then you'd just ratchet it back and forth in order to tighten it enough. As for a tourniquet for kids, you can typically use a CAT on them unless they're really small, and in that case, odds are, they probably have a low enough blood pressure to make it so a tourniquet is not required and you could instead use a pressure bandage or a SWAT-T if you need to use a tourniquet on a child that small. As for pets, you have two options, the K-9 and the SWAT-T. Both likely would be effective options. Even then, there's one scenario it would be better in, and that's EDC and stealth carrying it, but for EDC, there are tourniquet holsters for CAT tourniquets and other tourniquets that can actually be trusted. However, this could be improved, maybe by first of all, making it wider, then allowing for some sort of locking buckle that actually lets it stay in place, and then a way to get more power out of the pulling force. Now then, RapidTQ, if you're reading this, I have a piece of advise for you. Don't retire the idea behind this tourniquet, but worked with the group behind the RMT in order to make this something that can actually achieve the goal you have in mind. There are so many who hate this tourniquet, because as much as I want y'all to succeed, going off of objective information, there are so many flaws that seem to have been ignored when discussed by those in the emergency and tactical medicine communities. If you want an example of what I mean, go to Reddit under the emergency or tactical medicine subreddits and search up the RATS tourniquets, and odds are, you'll see what I mean within a matter of moments. It can be made to be so much more than that, and we're willing to help, but you need to actually make the first steps to show you're willing to improve this. If you truly want to improve emergency and tactical medicine, then listen to the people, and what they say. We're not exactly against you, we're against inadequacy, and if you're willing to make it right, then odds are, many more like me would be more than happy to help improve it.

Favorite Tourniquet

Easiest to carry, easiest to apply, works on the widest variety of patients. I've had two successful uses of this product, one in a situation where a CAT tourniquet failed.
